PUBLIC HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AT 521 and PRW

Hopefully you have all heard the news that the Charlotte Housing Authority has proposed a re-zoning hearing that would allow them to put up a subsidized housing development at the corner of Johnston Road and Providence Road West. Basically, right down the street from our neighborhood.

Email Warren Cooksey at  warren@warrencooksey.com Phone: (704) 347-0420 Write: Cooksey for City Council 14025 Dunbritton Lane #607 Charlotte, NC 28277. Urge your friends and neighbors to do the same.

TELL HIM TO VOTE NO ON THE RE-ZONING PROPOSAL!!! I don't know about anyone else, but I purchased a home in Ballantyne for the great schools, low crime, and community. Not to live down the road from Section 8 housing.

Re: PUBLIC HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AT 521 and PRW

Hooray for social engineering and politics ! Southeast Charlotte doesn't have nearly enough domestic violence/drug problems and petty crime. This should fix the problem.
At least  they can get a job at the new Superdooper Walmart under construction on 521 just past the foxhole.

Email sent !
Why would Cooksey care though ? He sits as a member of the "Housing and Neighborhood development Committe" - among who's focus is to expand affordable housing in Charlotte.

Link to the Ballantyne Scoop webpage with some good details.

Re: PUBLIC HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AT 521 and PRW

Cooksey is District 7's city council rep (that is ours) so he will be voting on the re-zoning issue. They are not voting on the actual housing development, its the re-zoning of the land for residential use that is on the table. As for Cooksey, his view shouldn't be whether to expand affordable housing, it should be NOT to put it an area that is already highly-congested with traffic and will add to the overcrowding of our schools, and the probability of rising crime rates and plummeting property values. Unfortunately, the City Council can only vote on whether or not to re-zone the land, not what will actually go on it. So right now the best option is vote AGAINST the re-zoning so it stays commercial.

This is the link as to when the rezoning meeting is to be held and several contact names for those interested.  Please keep in mind, like Soxfan29 stated above, that this is for rezoning from commercial to residential only.  I would guess that the rezoning will go through but the more feedback our elected officials receive the better a chance of a favorable outcome.....  depending on ones point of view.

Re: PUBLIC HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AT 521 and PRW

The arguments need to be against more residential development. I've already written to Cooksey siting the dozen of multi-unit residences that have already gone up in that area over the last two months (using the new HT complex at AK and Johnston) and this area does not need more housing- look at Ballanmoore- that land has been sitting empty for two years because no one is building right now, and they want to add more developments?

Well...  The housing authority has pulled out but the "other developers" are still trying to move forward with the project.  I have to believe that these developers are going to have a long uphill battle to finance this project at a estimated cost of 13 million dollars.  Someone out there has to have a better idea of what to do with 7 acres then build more apartments!  Some sort of "sustainable" ammenity seems like a better idea than paving 7 acres....
